unearthed® and Action Against Hunger – working together to end child hunger

Since 2010 we have supported Action Against Hunger, an international humanitarian organisation that works to save the lives of children suffering from life-threatening malnutrition, by donating 1p from every pack sold towards their life-saving work.2016 1p from every pack logo

“We donate 1p from every pack sold, to Action Against Hunger, to help save the lives of children suffering from malnutrition”

Incredibly, we’ve raised over ONE MILLION pounds for Action Against Hunger since the partnership began and that’s all down to you, our customers, for buying our products! So thanks a million!
To celebrate this major milestone, some of the unearthed team joined with Action Against Hunger ambassadors to fly to Peru and trek over 26 miles up to Machu Picchu all in aid of this great cause.

Seeing how those 1p’s have added up over the years has inspired all of us to get more involved with the charity, so we’ve visited the projects we fund in Africa, taken part in challenging runs, raced bikes, baked food to sell to colleagues and happily told all of our friends and customers about this incredible partnership and the important work Action Against Hunger do.

We’re proud to share with you some of the large impacts that your support has helped Action Against Hunger achieve. We hope that these stories will inspire you to know that your support, however small, can make a difference in the world!

Supporting children and their families in Rajasthan, India

In June 2015, unearthed® have started co-funding an inspiring Action Against Hunger project in Rajasthan which is all about improving the nutrition of families – in particular children under 5 years of age.

Despite its status as an economic powerhouse, India has the largest number of children suffering from life-threatening malnutrition in the world. In Rajasthan alone, one in every 15 children die before reaching the age of one. Funding from unearthed® is being used for a project in Kishanganj, a rural area in Baran, eastern Rajasthan, characterised by very poor living conditions, poor health and hygiene and a prevalence of severe malnutrition.

The project aims to combat malnutrition through community-managed programmes. This approach allows malnourished children to be treated at a local community health centre and then at home, rather in hospital (which involves families having to travel long distances and staying away from their homes and livelihoods for up to 2 weeks). Community management enables more children to be reached and is crucial in order to dramatically reduce the number of malnourished children in India.

Action Against Hunger has been working in Baran for the last 3 years and is now able to scale up the existing programme, thanks to unearthed®’s support. The charity will involve screening for malnutrition of all children under five, training of frontline staff and awareness-raising sessions on good nutrition, hygiene and basic healthcare. It will directly benefit 21,525 children under five (12.9% of the total population of Kishanganj).

"

unearthed® was born out of the enjoyment of food and flavours. We realise that for many people in this world, food remains a worry and a necessity in short supply, rather than a joy. Whilst the variety we are privileged to enjoy may be unrealistic for all, we share Action Against Hunger's vision of a world without hunger at least. We want to make food less of a concern and more of a pleasure for others in future.

We all agree that hunger, especially acute hunger, is morally unacceptable. However, long-term, sustainable solutions do exist and the Health Gardens project is a great example of this. Thanks to the support of unearthed® we are one step closer to a world without hunger.
